A bit rich for the ALP opposition to be calling for an inquiry into housing indemnity insurance given their appalling record in managing our last scheme!
We had a good housing indemnity insurance scheme introduced during the Groom Liberal administration in 1992 which gave up to 6 years of redress after the home was finished. That scheme was watered down under Labor in 2003 by changing the avenues for claim to ‘last resort’ and finally dismantled by Labor in 2008 by removing the mandatory requirements which gave collective protection to all home builders. The result was the insurance industry instantly withdrew from the marketplace and we have been the only State in the Nation to be without such protection ever since, a disgraceful situation all subsequent Tasmanian Governments should be ashamed of.
